Water Sports in a Whitewater Paradise

Streams, waterfalls, and mountain lakes – the region around Matrei has exciting whitewater to offer. Whether kayaking, canyoning, or wild rafting tours – here you can experience adventure in the middle of the gorgeous alpine world. The Isel with its whitewater is especially appealing to kayaking and rafting fans. Every level of difficulty is available, from a romantic tour along the river to an ultimate thrill with rafting or waterfall jumping with the kayak. Between Matrei and Lienz, there are rafting routes in various difficulty levels. The season begins in mid May and ends in September. The sport of rafting is basically unaffected by weather and is an interesting alternative for bad weather days.

The entry to this route is the Tauernbach, just below the output of the Prosseggklamm. A few hundred meters later the Tauernbach flows in the Isel, which is quite leisurely meanders through the valley Matrei without exhibiting ever greater difficulties. Some not too difficult decreases and many eddies make this section suitable for intermediate skiers. It is ideal to improve their whitewater technique. A very nice exercise and training route.
The entry to this route is located between Matrei and Virgen "Unterpölach" on the country road before the increase to Virgen. Initially, it is depending on water level slightly more dynamic route (WW3) - then the stream winds slowly towards Matrei. An optimal exercise route for advanced beginners.
This section of the river is certainly the most famous in East Tyrol. Its heart , the Cataract ( " Feglitz - Palfen " ), is the show-piece of East Tyrol. The cataract is usually movable and should definitely be visited before the trip! Also the episode piece has massive and fast runs.
